HK$3 million bluefin tuna, on your plate for cheap

Hong Kong food and beverage company Taste of Japan has an annual gimmick that gets lots of buzz.

They go to Tsujiki market for the year's first auction, bid aggressively for the biggest and most expensive fish, then bring it back to Hong Kong and sell it at their sushi chains, Itamae Sushi and Itacho Sushi, at incredibly low prices to their customers.

Conservationists say the gesture comes at a huge cost to biodiversity.

In partnership with Tokyo restaurant Kyubey, Taste of Japan paid HK$3.07 million for a 342 kg Pacific bluefin tuna yesterday. This broke the previous record price of HK$1.9 million for a 202 kg fish in 2001.
